Los Angeles, New York Stay Atop Standings

April 28, 2001

New York 3, Texas 1 - Chris Henderson scored two goals and Hristo Stoitchkov scored one as New York dominated Texas. Henderson, starting at forward for injured Clint Mathis, scored teh first two goals in the 18th and 27th minutes. Mastroeni crossed the ball to Henderson who shot a rocket off Matt Jordan. The ball drifted toward the goal and Henderson beat a defender to the ball to push it across the line for a 1-0 lead. Stoitchkov set up Henderson's second goal, dribbling across the top of the box and leaving the ball for Henderson with a nifty backheel. Henderson shot perfectly into the far corner for a 2-0 lead. Stoitchkov scored his goal in the 34th minute, unleashing a 25 yard left-footed shot that seemed to surprise Jordan. Adolfo Valencia managed to score in the 89th minute for Texas.

Los Angeles 2, Detroit 1 - Ariel Graziani and Lothar Matthaus scored to give Los Angeles a 2-1 victory that kept them atop the Western Division standings. Matthaus scored the winner with a 49th minute penalty kick. Mamadou Diallo was sent into the box by Dema Kovalenko adn then was fouled hard by Simon Elliot, resulting in the penalty kick that Matthaus nailed easily into the right corner. Dante Washington had put Detroit ahead 1-0 in the 7th minute. Diego Serna sent a cross into the box and Washington fought his way onto the end of the play to poke it past Tony Meola. Ariel Graziani scored his first of the season for Los Angeles in the 32nd minute to tie it at 1-1. Graziani sped past the defense and Diallo centered an easy pass to the penalty spot, which Graziani put away. Dante Washington missed a good chance from ten yards away in the final two minutes. Bobby Convey got the start for Los Angeles, making him the youngest player in MLS history.

San Diego 2, Boston 1 - Preki scored an extra time goal to lead San Diego to a 2-1 victory on the road in Boston. Preki murder a shot that was headed for the upper left corner before Zach Thornton dove to his right. However, the power on the shot carried it off Thornton's hands and into the right corner. The play started with a Todd Yeagley corner kick that was sent deep and outside the penalty area to Steve Ralston, who laid it off for Preki's strike. Cobi Jones scored in the 4th minute for Boston and Ante Razov answered in the 42nd for San Diego to tie it. Jaime Moreno missed a golden opportunity to give Boston a 2-1 lead in the 78th minute. His initial shot hit the post but he got to the rebound, only to see his second attempt hit the post as well.
